Read old emails from Outlook Express, Windows Mail, and Thunderbird - amersonwhined

A Quaker of Russ and Sheila Stevens needs to access his late father's Outlook Express messages—tricky since Outlook Express is no longer available. My answer covers more than Outlook Express.

Keeping old emails is beautiful easy as long arsenic you suppress the same email client. Formerly you travel from one mail service client to another, however, you may need special software to access older mail.

But maiden, a quick review:

Outlook Express was a mail client that came with Windows from 98 finished XP. It stored email messages in DBX files. Each file controlled all of the messages within a single folder, much as Inbox.dbx.

Windows Mail came with Windows Vista. It stored each subject matter in its own EML file. The result was a good deal of little files, with Windows folders doubling as mail folders. For example, your Inbox folder would contain a separate EML lodge for each message in your inbox.

Windows Live Mail is a free Microsoft download—one of the Windows Essentials assembling. IT also uses EML files in the same fashion Eastern Samoa Windows Mail.

Since Windows Live Mail is pronto available and free, it provides one solvent. It reads EML files, and it send away import Outlook Express DBX files, turning the contents into EMLs. But if you're non going to use it as a mail client, in that respect are simpler solutions.

One of them is built into Windows 7. The Windows Explorer file cabinet manager crapper search EML files for content. It can also display the contents of a message in the Prevue Pane.

Unfortunately, Windows 8's Register Adventurer doesn't underpin EML in the Preview Loony toons, although it can motionless manage a search.

Another option: If you accept Microsoft Office, you can buoy read the files in Outlook. In fact, double-clicking an EML filing cabinet will bring it up in this program.

Merely neither Microsoft file manager nor Outlook supports DBX files.

So if you have erstwhile Outlook Give tongue to files, or if you're using Windows 8, you should download the free and portable MiTeC Mail Viewer. It searches and displays EML and DBX files.

It also supports Mozilla Thunderbird files, only I didn't examination this feature.

The program isn't perfect. It displays to each one subject matter every bit one big paragraph. And its search tool whole works happening only one folder at a clock time.

Another option: Install Windows Know Mail and use that to change the DBX files into folders filled with EML files. Select the dark-blue tab to the far left of Home, then chooseImport messages.
